What is Royal Rainbow Storytime?
Thank you for reaching out to the Library.
Royal Rainbow Storytime is a family-friendly event, offered in partnership with Pflag Halton. It includes hands-on activities and a storytime performance by a drag queen who will showcase age-appropriate stories and songs that celebrate diversity, inclusion, and self-expression.
Why has the library decided to offer Royal Rainbow Storytime?
Thank you for reaching out to the Library.
Royal Rainbow Storytime is something that Burlington Public Library (and many other Libraries) hosted pre-pandemic with much community support. Resuming this program now is part of our gradual return to full service. We have received community requests for the program, and it aligns with the Library’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
How does Royal Rainbow Storytime fit with the Library’s mission?
Thank you for reaching out to the Library.
Royal Rainbow Storytime aligns with BPL's mission to inspire imagination, collaboration, and compassion. The Library values and is committed to diversity and inclusion, and we strive to provide access to a wide range of materials and opportunities so our community can choose what they do and don’t want to learn and participate in. The Library provides collections, programs, and spaces where the community can listen, learn, and share ideas.
Why is Drag Storytime being presented for children and families?
Thank you for reaching out to the Library.
Many children are and/or have 2SLGBTQ+ people in their everyday lives. Many parents and caregivers want their children to be accepting and open-minded about the different people they meet. Burlington Public Library engages performers, artists, and other special guests to share their talents with children, including real stories. Drag Artists epitomize freedom of self-expression. It is a natural fit to celebrate individuality and inclusivity with a family storytime hosted by Drag Artists.
Is this program only for 2SLGBTQIA+ families?
Thank you for reaching out to the Library.
This program is open to anyone interested in taking part respectfully and learning about inclusion. All adults must attend with a child and vice versa. We have partnered with Pflag Halton to ensure a portion of the spaces are available to queer families since a goal of the event is to provide representation and connection for these communities.
I tried to register for Royal Rainbow Storytime and the program is full. Will it be offered again?
Thank you for reaching out.
We’re sorry you couldn’t register for the program. Space is limited and this is a popular program. We intend to offer this event in the future, so keep an eye on our program calendar.
I’ve heard about protests happening at these events. What are you doing to ensure my family will be safe if we attend?
Thank you for reaching out to the Library.
We understand your concern. We are carefully monitoring comments about this event. While the Library respects peoples’ right to demonstrate opposing views, everyone must abide by our Customer Experience Standards and Code of Conduct. Comments or interactions that are disruptive or threatening will be reported to Halton Regional Police Service.
You don’t have the answers I’m looking for (or) I want to speak to a manager about this event. (There is some opposition, but tone is respectful).
You are welcome to leave a message for our CEO, Lita Barrie, at 905-639-3611 x1273. Messages will be checked daily.
